The Birthday Box

Jane, Katie, Beth, and Angela were walking to Beth's house for her birthday party. When they got there, Marcie, Carol, aand Anna were already inside idly tossing the water balloons back and forth.
"Finally!" said Anna. "Yeah," added Marcie. "We've been waiting forever for you!" Then Katie got Beth's toy microphone and shouted into it," Let the festivities begin!" They played Pin the Tail on the Donkey, water balloon toss, and for the grand finale, the pinata. Then at last it was time for presents. Beth opened them all but the one from her parents. When she saw it she said," Hey! The lid is off! Who opened my present?" Nobody had, so Beth shrugged and looked inside anyway. The box was empty, of course. Her mom paled and said," It must be in the house somewhere. You'd better catch it!" All the girls looked confused. Beth asked," But what is it?" Her mom replied," I'm not going to tell you - it would ruin the surprise. But I'm sure you'll know it when you see it!" Angela said," We need to get organized and search the house!" Carol asked if she could use the bathroom first. She left the room. Five minutes later, they heard Carol scream and she ran back into the kitchen. "What is it?" asked Marcie. "A monster!" cried Carol. "It had big feet and I heard thumping." Beth's mother said," That's it! Go get it; it's Beth's birthday gift." "You got her a monster?" asked Jane in disbelief. Beth's mom shook her head and said," No, but you'd better catch it!" So Beth, Anna and Jane went to the bathroom, each visualizing a horrible fire-breathing monster. Anna timidly turned on the light and... and a fuzzy face looked up at her! Anna yelled and tripped over it, landing on the floor with a thud. Jane and Beth peeked in. Anna was in such a funny position on the floor they couldn't help giggling. Jane asked," Are you hurt?" Anna shook her head and got up. Beth picked up the "monster" and the three walked back to the kitchen. Beth showed the monster to everyone and said," It's only a little bunny rabbit!" Everyone sighed in relief. Beth shook her head and said," I'll have to tell the class about this." So the next day she told the whole kindergarten class about the birthday box! |
