"Soon it's going to be Mother's Day," John told Samantha. "I looked it up on their calendar." "What are we going to do?" Samantha asked. John thought for a minute. "Well, we should clean up the mousehole for her," he said. "She hates doing that. And maybe serve her a really delicious breakfast in bed." "How about presents," Samantha suggested. "We could each get her a present." John nodded. "Good idea," he said. "We'll put them in the living room. When she walks in, she'll see them." Samantha laughed. "When is Mother's Day?" she asked. Suddenly Mr. Mouse came running through the door. He was carrying a lot of peas. He put them in a little basket they used for food and said, "Dinner." Mr. Mouse looked around. "Where's your mother," he asked. "She's taking a nap," John answered. Samantha was sniffing the peas. "Yuck!" she declared. "I hate peas. Can't you ever get carrots? I like carrots." John rolled his eyes. Samantha made a big fuss every time Mr. Mouse brought home peas. "Live with it," he said. "I like peas. Besides, little pieces of carrot are too hard to get. They almost always have peas, so they're easy to grab." Samantha stuck her tongue out at him. "Show off," she muttered. Mrs. Mouse came into the room. "Hello," she said. "Ah, peas for supper, I see. Good. We haven't had peas in a long time. They're good, aren't they?" John grinned at Samantha, who made a face. Mrs. Mouse went into the kitchen to make dinner, and Mr. Mouse went to rest before they ate. Samantha and John started talking about Mother's Day again. "So when is it?" Samantha asked. "I forget," John replied. "I'll go check." He ran out of the mousehole and was back after a couple of minutes. "It's reallly soon," he said, panting. "It's tomorrow!" Samantha gasped. "That gives us no time!" she wailed. "We'll do it," John said. "I'll go get the food. You go in the kitchen and help Mom make dinner. Try to find out what she'd like." Samantha sighed. She hated to help make dinner, but if she had to, she would. She went to the kitchen. "Hello," Mrs. Mouse said, looking up. "What are you doing here?" "I was wondering if you needed any help," Samantha said. Mrs. Mouse looked surprised. "Sure," she said slowly. "I need to wash out some bowls. You can mash the rest of these peas." Samantha took the small stick from her mother and started to mash the peas in the bowl. It was very tiring. There was a chip of soap and a small bucket of water. There was also a piece of cloth. Mrs. Mouse went over to the stack of walnut bowls and started to wash them. "If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?" Samantha asked. Mrs. Mouse thought about it. "Well, I'd wish for a bigger mousehole," she said. "A tablecloth would be nice. And maybe a couple of pillows for the living room." Samantha nodded. Samantha and John went to John's room after dinner. He had brought a peanut-butter cup, a piece of popcorn, and a piece of toast with butter on it. "Wow," Samantha said. "She's going to like this breakfast. Okay, Mom wants a tablecloth and some pillows for the living room." She didn't mention the bigger mousehole because they couldn't get that for her. "All right," John said. "I'll get the pillows. You get the tablecloth. We'll go when everyone is asleep." Samantha agreed and they went to bed. Later that night, John and Samantha crept out of the mousehole and split up. Samantha went straight to a small craft room. There she gathered her supplied. The humans were making a blanket, so there were lots of squares just the right size. She also found some glue, a long piece of yarn, and a pair of manicure scissors. The cloth was blue with green swirls. The yarn was also green. Samantha carefully glued the yarn around the bottomt of the square. She used the small scissors to cut it. Then she ran back to the mousehole. John went to the kitchen first. He had seen a bag of cotton there. Luckily for him, it had dropped on the floor. He pulled out a lot of cotton and then ran to the craft room. Samantha had already left. John got some fabfic and found the tiny scissors that Samantha had left, and the glue. He made a square with the stuffing and then glued fabric around it. He glued it very well. He made four pillows. Then he also went back to the mousehole. The next morning, when Mrs. Mouse woke up, she was surprised to see her children standing there. John was holding a tray of food. Samantha had a peanut-butter cup. "What are you doing?" Mrs. Mouse asked, puzzled. "Happy Mother's Day!" John and Samantha cried. "We brought you breakfast." John gave her the tray. Samantha put her peanut-butter cup on it. She had written Happy Mother's Day on the top. Mrs. Mouse ate and declared it the best breakfast ever. "Come on!" Samantha said. She grabbed her mother's arm and pulled her into the living room. Mrs. Mouse looked around. To her amazement, she saw four beautiful pillows on the chairs. There was a pillow on each chair. "I made the pillows," John announced proudly. Mrs. Mouse gave him a big hug. "Look at the table," Samantha said, jumping up with excitement. Mrs. Mouse looked at the table. "Oh, my," she said. "It's gorgeous!" "I made it," Samantha said. "That's why I asked you what you wanted yesterday." Mrs. Mouse smiled down at her two children and said," Thank you very much. This has been a great morning. Why, you even cleaned the living room. How thoughtful! Thank you!" |
