The Mouse Family Adventure

The White's were going on vacation! Mr. White called to his son, Fred," Do you have everything?" Fred ran into the room, carrying two suitcases in one hand and dragging a trunk with the other. "Ready!" he cried. Out they went, not noticing Mr. White's wallet on the table.

In a cozy mouse-hole, John and Samantha were playing Bingo. To get Bingo, you had to have the shape of a diamond.

"Bingo!" Samantha shrieked, happily. John leaned over to inspect her board and said grumpily," That's the third time, Sam. Are you cheating?" Samantha shook her head and said," No, I'm just better. Guess what!" Mrs. Mouse started putting the game away and asked," What?" "They're going on vacation," Samantha answered. "They" meant the humans. Mr. Mouse put down his bit of newspaper and said," They are? When?" Samntha warily poked her head out of the mousehole and said," I think they're gone now. Can we watch TV?" Mr. Mouse grunted, returning to his paper. Mrs. Mouse advanced from the hole and said," I think it's all right, kids. Come on out, but be careful!"

Samantha ran outside and crawled up the leg of the couch. From there, she jumped on the coffee table and said," Hurry up, John. I want to watch cartoons." John followed her and pressed the "On" button on the remote control. Sound blasted from the stereo as a cat chased a bird with a head the size of a baseball. John looked around and said," I'll get some food, okay." Samantha nodded, her eyes glued to the screen. They could finally watch TV close up! You couldn't get a good view from the mousehole.

John skittered into the kitchen and smiled. In the confusion, the fridge door hadn't been closed all the way. It was open just enough. John squeezed in and said," All right!" There was a bowl of popcorn and a baggie of chocolate. John opened the baggie and put some of the popcorn into it. Then he jumped out and brought the bag to his sister. Samantha grinned and said," Thanks." They dug in.

John watched a commercial that was telling about 911. "Criminals," he said. "Stuff like that never happens to us." Samantha shrugged. "Maybe we should be ready," she said, giggling. John laughed and the two mice began to run around, looking at the parts of the house they had never seen before.

Suddenly Samantha stopped. "What was that?" she asked. There was another crash outside. The two mice looked at each other. Samantha climbed up on the bookshelf and looked out the window. She squeaked. "It's a criminal!" she cried. "He's wearing all black." John spotted the cat's ball of string (the cat was only allowed to play with it with a human watching) and said," Let's set a trap."

They wove the string between the window and the bookcase and made a hammock between. Anyone who landed there would get the bookshelf on top of him. Then they climbed up the curtain to the shelf above the window with another hammock of string. "Stay here," John told Samantha. "You know what to do." He climbed down and ran to the phone on the table. He pushed the phone off the hook and dialed 911.

The crook slammed the window open and started to climb in.

"Yes, who is this?" the emergancy service person asked politely. Suddenly, a crash sounded, accompanied by a "Help!" from the crook. The bookcase had fallen on him. Samantha let loose the string, which fell on him, completely entangling him. Then both mice ran to their hole. The emergancy services person thought that someone was hurt and sent someone right over.

Just as the police got there, the White's came back for Mr. White's wallet. The police knew them and said," Good thing you had that trap set up, mister. That thief will be locked up for sure." Mrs. White stared in amazement at the crook tangled up in string. The police bore him away, leaving the family staring stupidly after them. Mr. White shook his head and went inside. The TV was blaring, popcorn and candy crumbs were scattered over the coffee table, and the fridge door was open. Fred looked inside and said," I didn't do that!"

In the mousehole, John and Samantha were eating some popcorn and chocolate they'd managed to save. Mmm, yum!
