Danny decided to try to make some money. He dragged a table down from the attic and found a
package of paper cups and a plastic punch bowel. Problem solved! He'd make a lemonade stand.
He took his dollar and went down to the corner store. All he needed was sugar. He had a lemon tree
in his backyard. Unfortunately, the store was out of sugar. But on the way home, Danny met an old man pushing a cart full of strange packages and things. He stopped Danny and asked," What's the matter, boy?" Danny stared at him in astonishment and replied," Nothing. Just that I want to make a lemonade stand and I don't have any sugar." The old man smiled. He dug around in his cart and handed Danny a red package that just said one word, "SUGAR." Danny handed the man his dollar and got 75 cents in change. Then the man started to push his cart down the street. Danny went to his house and made his lemonade. When he was done, he made a sign that said," Lemonade. 10 cents." Then he set up his stand. He would put the money in an old tin box. Danny poured himself a cup. As he drank. he thought," It'd be nice to be invisible. I wish I could be invisible." When he finished his cup, a girl came over and handed him a dime. He gave her a cup and then turned to put the money in his box. When to turned back around, the girl was gone. Danny looked around and thought, "Maybe she didn't like it." A few minutes later, one of his friends came over and gave him a dime. Danny put the money in his box and when he looked up again, the boy was gone. Danny shook his head and looked up and down the street. There was no trace of him. "That's funny," Danny thought. "I could've sworn. . ." He shrugged. A few minutes later, a jogger ran up and said," Ah, lemonade. Here you go." He slid a quarter across the table. He picked up a cup of lemonade, but didn't drink it. Danny gave him his change. The jogger put it into a pouch he wore around his waist and drank the lemonade. "Do you-" Danny started to ask, then stopped. The man had disappeared! Danny rubbed his eyes and glanced cautiously at his lemonade. He took a sip of one of the cups and looked down at himself. He wasn't there! Danny took another sip and looked down. He still wasn't there. Frowning, Danny finished off the cup. While he was drinking, he thought," I wish I was visible again." He set the cup down and stared in amazement. He was visible! "Thanks, boy," a voice said. Danny looked up. The jogger was there. "Y-you're welcome," Danny stammered. The jogger took off. Danny stared at his lemonade. He picked up one of the cups and looked at it carefully. "I know!" Danny cried. He drank a cup while thinking," I wish I could fly!" He threw the cup in the garbage and tried to fly. It didn't work. A little boy ran up and watched Danny flapping his arms. "Can I have some lemonade?" the boy asked uncertainly. "Sure!" Danny squeaked. He gave the boy a cup and took the dime. The boy took a sip and said," Yummy. Hey, look!" Danny stared in astonishment as the boy rose up into the sky. Open-mouthed, he looked at his lemonade. Then he took another drink and flew up several inches above the ground. He quickly took another drink and wished that he couldn't fly. The boy in the air took a drink, too, and he floated back down to ground. Danny thought for a second. Then he knew what to do. Taking a sip of his magic lemonade, he said," I wish everyone would be happy." Then he drank the rest of the cup. Now he felt very happy. A grumpy old man stalked up and muttered," Here." He gave Danny a dime. He took a long swig of lemonade. Suddenly, his face changed. He smiled and said," Thank you." Whistling, he continued down the street. Danny had his lemonade stand every day until the sugar ran out. Everyone who had his lemonade was immediately happy. When the sugar ran out, Danny didn't have a magic lemonade stand anymore, but he did live on a rather happy street. |
