Snow in the Desert

Chani was in Mrs. Fike's math class when it happened. Niles was the first to notice. "Hey!" he cried in astonishment. "It's snowing!" Everyone ran to the window and peered out. Sure enough, he was right. "Back to your seats!" Mrs. Fike called. All the kids went back to their seats. Chani raised her hand and asked," Can we go out in it?" "Yeah!" yelled everybody else. "Can we!" Mrs. Fike shook her head and the class groaned with disappointment. Then Mr. Sluster came in from the classroom next door.

"Have you noticed it's snowing?" he asked. Mrs. Fike nodded and said," Isn't it amazing?"

"I don't get it," said Mr. Sluster. "I think I'll read a snow story to my class." He went back inside his own classroom.

Mrs. Fike thought for a minute and said," All right. Is everyone done with the math minutes? We'll correct those in a minute. Turn to page 48 in your Math Steps book. We're moving on today." Chani got out her Math Steps book and flipped to page 48. It was fractions.

"All right," Mrs. Fike said. "If you have a snowflake divided into 3/4, what's an equivalent fraction for that?" Chani raised her hand. "6/8," she answered. Mrs. Fike nodded and asked," That's right. Does anyone need me to do that problem on the board?" The period passed quickly. When the bell rang, everyone passed the folders back and hurried to their next class.

Chani met Lene at Mr. Sluster's classroom. "Did you see the snow?" Lene asked. Chani nodded and said," Isn't it cool? I can't wait until lunch!"

In Mr. Sluster's class, they read a winter story. Then they finished their vocabulary and handed it in. In Mr. Raylak's class, he told them that, just for today, they were going to go to a different science book and learn about snow. It was very interesting. Chani was a teacher aide in Mrs. Ganger's class. She made lots of snowflakes for Mrs. Ganger to decorate her room with.

Then it was lunch. Chani raced outside and joined up with her second best friend, Melinda. She looked up at the sky and watched the snow come down. "Isn't this neat!" she cried. "Who would've thought," Melinda said, catching a snowflake on her tongue. Inside the cafeteria, Melinda and Chani sat with Melinda's best friend, Becca. Becca had bought four chocolate chip cookies and gave one to Melinda and Chani to split. Everyone was talking about the snow.

When they were done eating, Melinda, Chani, and Becca ran outside. There was heaps of snow on the ground. Becca started making snowballs to throw at people. Melinda and Chani made a snowman.

By 7th period, it had stopped snowing. Chani's last class was yearbook, and they were talking about the snow. Mrs. Ban Wickle said that in had come in time for the dance. There was a Winter dance the next day. Chani's best friend, Raquel, was going to save a snowball to throw at her brother, Dave.

When Chani went home that day, she was very happy that it had snowed.
