The Steadfast Tin Soldier Five and twenty of them, there were, all standing at attention on two solid feet. Except for one. The last to be made, he stood proudly on his one leg, undaunted. I watched from my castle doorway, where I stood forever in this tiring pose: up on my toes with one leg behind me. A ballerina such as I can only be graceful. He watched me with desire, believing I was one-legged such as he and wished for me as his bride. One day, he fell off of the windowsill and I, helpless, watched as he disappeared. Though all looked for him, he was not to be found. And I stood steadfastly on my toes. He came back at some point. I, only knowing the time that was eternity standing by my castle, cannot say when. We looked at each other without speaking and I saw the love in his eyes. Suddenly, a boy took up the soldier, threw him in the stove. Still we looked at each other. Whether it was love or fate, we will never know, but a gentle wind from the opened door carried me to him and, as he slowly melted, I burned instantly, being made of paper. All that was left was my little metal spangle and his little tin heart… (Oct. 2004) |
