Discovery at Coyote Point by Ann Gabhart Twelve year old Ance spends the year with his father's parents. He's not happy because he will miss his mom, who's working on an archeology dig far away. And the mystery of his father might ruin staying with his grandparents. His dad had once walked off to Coyote Point and never came back. Ance's mom is sure he is dead. Ance believes that, too. Coyote Point is a forest area that belongs to Ance's grandfather, who let it go wild years ago. Soon Ance goes to the Point. He likes the wildlife and the peace. He makes friends with Red, the coyote. Red leads him to his mate, who's caught in a trap. Ance makes crooning noises to keep the coyote calm and then he opens the trap. Ance finds other traps and he springs them open. His friend Carrie's father shoots Red's mate. Ance finds her in a cave. But Ance can't do much for her, except spray medicine on her leg. He decides to stay with her. While he's there he explores the cave. He finds an old pocket knife. When his grandfather comes looking for him, Ance shows him the knife. It turns out to be Rusty's. Ance's grandfather goes to look in the cave. Ance realizes what he's looking for. This book has a happy ending. Carrie brings him a puppy, just the thing Ance wants! |
